Oxygen is prescribed when your oxygen level falls too low — at rest, while walking, or during sleep. It is not addictive, and using it when needed protects your heart and helps you stay active.
Checking your oxygen level
- Sit and rest for a few minutes first.
- Warm your hands; remove nail polish.
- Wait until the reading is steady.
- Ask your doctor what your own target range is, and note your usual readings.
Oxygen safety
- No smoking — by you or anyone near you.
- Keep oxygen away from gas stoves, lamps, candles and incense.
- Don't use oil-based creams or petroleum jelly on your face.
- Store cylinders upright in a ventilated place.
